Bibliography and books on Pi

The world of pi on the internet is vast but to me few sites are complete... Anyway, I have not found any french site that i was really looking for, and for a maths-lover who is not a mathematician like me, it is sometime hard to work out all the proofs on your own....
To make this site and relieve my passion for more than 9 years, I had to copy a few formulae and proof read in great books.
Few work exist on the subject, but in my opinion they are very interesting because they are written by men passionate and full of talent..... (wow!): Here they are:

A myth in french ! Almost not possible to find it (but I have one !), this book is very complete and funny though. It is full of stories about mathematics and Pi

Le Fascinant Nombre Pi
Jean-Paul Delahaye - - 1997 - 224 pages
Language : ; Type(s) : Mathematics , History / biographies , Entertainment
Here is what Simon Plouffe wrote and I fully agree: The book is a < hit > in France and I can understand why. Jean-Paul Delahaye wrote over 100 articles and he is a regular columnist for the magazine Pour La Science which is the french version of Scientific American. He has the unique talent to explain in ordinary words advanced concepts and ideas. I think that he wrote the book on Pi with a bit of passion and real interest : and we can feel that interest and passion through the book. The book begins with an historical survey of the computation of Pi and develops further on different aspects about the digits of Pi, new algorithms (including the BBP algorithm). There is a chapter about ideas around Chiatin, computation and logic and what represents an infinity of digits and the concept of a number like Pi, this part is quite fascinating to read. [...] I would say that he writes in a very precise way, simple, exact and direct. I recommend that book strongly. In my opinion it is a classic book, a must read book on Pi. Certainly the best book ever written on that subject.

Book about 15 mathematicians and Ramanujan in particular, which is why it appears here ! Quite fascinating but a little bit short though (not enough mathematicians !)

The Number Pi
P. Eymard/J.P. Lafon - Hermann/AMS - 1999 - 318 pages
Language : ; Type(s) : Mathematics
In English too: a very complete book but a very technical one too since this is entirely about formulas and exercises followed by proofs ! Even if you're undergraduate, the end is quite difficult. In any case, for amateur mathematicians, it's a book to have

Pi and the AGM
P. Borwein et J. Borwein - Wiley - 1987
Language : Anglais; Type(s) : Mathematics
A Bible ! yes, absolutely, everything in this book announces the arrival of Pi-God ! :-) However, this is only for amateur mathematicians... a very good level is required. If you like maths, that's a delightful book because all along it, you feel like any stuff in analysis can derive from the ideas in this book

The Joy of Pi
David Blatner - Walker & Co - 1999 - 144 pages
Language : Anglais; Type(s) : Mathematics , History / biographies , Entertainment
One of the most well-known books about Pi. Yet, I'm not fund of Pi, I find "Le Fascinant Nombre Pi" (see on this page) much better for instance. Still, it is a highly recommendable book, full of stories and anecdotes.

Pi : a Source Book
Lennart Berggren, Jonathan Borwein, Peter Borwein - Springer Verlag - 1997 - 736 pages
Language : Anglais; Type(s) : Mathematics , History / biographies
That's a pretty odd book. For Pi fans, that's the best in mathematics insofar as all original papers and texts about Pi are thoroughly gathered. A reference book. For the reader not utterly fascinated by mathematics history, that's much less useful.

Comment by Hercules Nova: Great first film by a young director who has become a large success on a minimal budget. I seem to watch it every other year.

AN interesting book with lots of formulas and programs in C to compute Pi digits. A few historical aspects and anecdotes too. A not-null level in mathematics is required for some chapters
